Accumath Toolchest — Flanges Dataset: Notes
Companion to accumath-flanges-dataset.csv (340 data rows). Every dimension in the
CSV was transcribed from a dimension table in an openly published flange
manufacturer or vendor catalog, opened and read during compilation. No value was
computed, estimated, or converted. If a value could not be verified in an open
catalog table, the field was left blank or the row omitted, and the gap is listed
under "Coverage limits and gaps" below.
Governing standards
- ASME B16.5 — Pipe Flanges and Flanged Fittings, NPS 1/2 through 24,
Classes 150, 300, 400, 600, 900, 1500, 2500. Dataset covers weld neck and
blind flanges.
- ASME B16.47 Series A — Large Diameter Steel Flanges, NPS 26 through 60.
Dataset covers Class 300 blind flanges only (the only Series A table family
readily available from an open manufacturer catalog).
- API Specification 6A — Wellhead and Christmas Tree Equipment. Dataset covers
Type 6B flanges (2000, 3000, 5000 psi working pressure) and Type 6BX
flanges (10000, 15000, 20000 psi), nominal sizes as published
(1 13/16 through 21 1/4).
Legal basis
- Flange dimensions are standardized facts. The values in this dataset are those
facts as published in open manufacturer catalogs — catalogs that flange
manufacturers publish openly so customers can select and order product. Each row
names its catalog source.
- The ASME B16.5, ASME B16.47, and API 6A standard documents themselves were
not copied, extracted, or reproduced. No table, text, or figure from a
standards document or a scan/reprint of one was used as a source. Where a
dimension was findable only in a standards document or in a metric-only table,
it was omitted and the gap recorded below (no unit conversion was performed to
fill it — conversions are the engine's job).
- Copyright caveat: the dimension values here are published catalog data. The
governing standards (ASME B16.5, ASME B16.47, API Spec 6A) are themselves
copyrighted, purchasable documents; this dataset contains none of their text.

Cross-checks performed during compilation: Coastal Flange's Class 150 weld-neck
sheet agrees with the Texas Flange Class 150 table; the C&N Industrial catalog's
API tables (published in mm, not used for dimension columns) agree with the Global
Supply Line inch chart except for one bolt-circle value, flagged in the CSV row
note (6BX 10000 psi, 4 1/16).
Conventions used
- Units. All recorded dimensions are inches, as published (
units_basis =
"inches"). Several consulted catalogs publish metric-only tables; those values
were not converted and were not used. Unit conversion is the engine's job.
- Fractions. Where a source prints fractions (Pure Nickel blind tables; Tech
Tubes and C&N bolt diameters), the fraction is recorded as its exact decimal
equivalent (e.g. 7/16 → 0.4375) or, for bolt diameters, as the printed fraction
(e.g. 7/8). This is transcription of the same published number, not a derived
dimension.
- Flange thickness, B16.5 Classes 150/300. The B16.5 minimum flange thickness
includes the 1/16 in. raised face. Texas Flange prints both a bare thickness
(T) and a total (TJ = T + raised face); the dataset records TJ, which is
the B16.5 minimum thickness and matches the blind-flange thicknesses published
by Pure Nickel and Coastal Flange for these classes. For Classes 400–2500 the
catalog thickness is recorded as printed.
- Publisher rounding variants are preserved. Sources round the same nominal
dimension differently (e.g. Class 600 NPS 1/2 bolt circle appears as 2.62 in
the Texas weld-neck table and 2.63 in the Coastal blind sheet). Each row keeps
the value its own source prints; rows are not "harmonized."
- Class 900 small sizes. The Texas Flange catalog states that Class 900
sizes 1/2 through 2 1/2 are identical to Class 1500. Those seven Class 900
weld-neck rows use the catalog's Class 1500 table, and each such row carries a
note saying so. (Coastal's Class 900 blind sheet lists these sizes directly and
agrees.)
- Bolt size for blind rows is the bolting for that size and class from the
same published bolt tables used for weld-neck rows (bolting is common to all
flange types of a size/class); the Tech Tubes Class 400 blind table publishes
the bolt diameter in the table itself.
- Bore column. Left blank for ASME rows: a weld-neck bore depends on the pipe
schedule ordered, so it is not a constant of the flange table. For API 6A rows
the nominal size is the nominal bore, so
bore repeats the nominal size.
The C&N catalog's maximum-bore values are published in mm only and were not
converted or recorded.
- API hub diameter. Recorded for Type 6B from the chart's hub-base diameter
(X). For Type 6BX the Global Supply Line chart publishes only the small-end hub
diameter, so
hub_dia_base is blank on 6BX rows.
- API raised-face diameter is the chart's K dimension, labeled "raised face
OD" in the manufacturer tables.
- API ring columns.
ring_groove and ring_gasket carry the published ring
designation (R, RX, or BX number). For 6B at 2000/3000 psi the chart lists the
groove as "R or RX"; the R number is recorded, with a row note.
Coverage limits and gaps
Row counts: B16.5 weld neck 136; B16.5 blind 133; B16.47 Series A blind 18;
API 6A Type 6B 30; API 6A Type 6BX 23. Total 340.
Deliberate gaps (omitted rather than guessed):
- B16.5 blind, NPS 22, Classes 150, 300, 400 — the open catalog tables used
for these classes (Pure Nickel; Tech Tubes) do not list NPS 22. Class 600
blind NPS 22 is included (Coastal sheet). Weld-neck NPS 22 is included for all
classes.
- B16.5 bolt diameters, NPS 22 (Classes 150, 300, 600) — not listed in the
Texas Flange bolt/stud table; left blank on those rows. NPS 3 1/2 Class 900
bolt diameter is likewise unlisted; there is no Class 900 NPS 3 1/2 flange row
in any case (Class 900 ranges skip 3 1/2, as do Classes 1500 and the 900/1500
blind tables).
- Flange types other than weld neck and blind (slip-on, socket weld,
threaded, lap joint) are not separate rows. Per the Texas Flange catalog's
combined tables, these types share the same OD, thickness, raised-face
diameter, and drilling as the weld-neck row of the same size and class; only
bore and hub details differ, and those are not recorded here.
- B16.47 Series A — only Class 300 blind (NPS 26–60) is included. Series A
weld neck and Series A Class 150 were not found in a readily available open
manufacturer catalog in inches and are out of scope for this pass. Bolt
diameters are not published on the Coastal Series A sheet and are blank on
those 18 rows. (Note: the Series A OD genuinely dips at NPS 38 relative to
NPS 36 in the published table; recorded as printed.)
- API 6BX 15000 psi, sizes above 7 1/16 and 5 1/8 — the Global Supply Line
chart's full-dimension table for this rating covers only 1 13/16 through
7 1/16 (no 5 1/8 row). A partial blind-flange table in the same chart gives
thickness only for some larger sizes, which is not enough for a row.
- API 6BX 20000 psi, 5 1/8 — not listed in the chart's full-dimension table.
- API 6B bolt/stud diameters for some sizes (2000 psi: 5 1/8, 11, 16 3/4,
21 1/4; 3000 psi: 5 1/8, 9, 16 3/4, 20 3/4) — not legibly published in the
sources used; left blank on those rows rather than inferred from hole size.
- Known discrepancy, flagged not resolved: 6BX 10000 psi, 4 1/16 bolt circle
is printed as 10.90 in the Global Supply Line chart and recorded as printed;
the C&N and SE Metal catalogs publish 258.8 mm for the same joint. See the CSV
row note.
