Every row's source column names the table it was transcribed from; no row mixes sources.
Pressure-rating basis — read before using any rating
- Steel and copper rows carry NO pressure rating, deliberately. Pressure capacity of steel pipe is established by the ASME B31 piping design codes from material, temperature, joint and corrosion allowance — there is no single standard rating to publish. Copper tube rated pressures likewise vary by temper (annealed/drawn) and joint method under B31. The
pressure_rating_psi and pressure_basis columns are empty for all carbon steel, stainless and copper rows.
- PVC ratings are manufacturer-published maximum working pressures for water at 73°F (23°C), unthreaded pipe, PVC 1120 compound per ASTM D1785.
- CPVC ratings are manufacturer-published for water at 73°F (23°C) per ASTM F441.
- HDPE ratings are PE4710 pressure classes for water at 73°F, per PPI TR-4 / AWWA C906 as published by WL Plastics. Verified from the WL102 header: DR 7 = 335, DR 9 = 250, DR 11 = 200, DR 13.5 = 160, DR 17 = 125, DR 21 = 100, DR 26 = 80, DR 32.5 = 65 psi.
Temperature caveats (plastics derate — ratings above are 73°F only)
- PVC: do not use above 140°F. Derate per Charlotte Pipe correction factors (× the 73°F rating): 90°F 0.75, 100°F 0.62, 110°F 0.50, 120°F 0.40, 130°F 0.30, 140°F 0.22.
- CPVC: each CPVC row notes the 180°F rating = 0.25 × the 73°F rating, per Charlotte Pipe's published temperature correction factors (independently printed as 0.25 by Harvel). Full Charlotte CPVC factors: 90°F 0.91, 100°F 0.82, 120°F 0.65, 140°F 0.50, 160°F 0.40, 180°F 0.25, 200°F 0.20.
- HDPE: pressure class falls with temperature per PPI guidance (e.g., PE4710 design pressure at 100°F ≈ 0.80 ×, at 120°F ≈ 0.63 ×, at 140°F ≈ 0.50 × the 73°F value, per published manufacturer derating tables). Ratings are for water; hydrocarbons and solvating chemicals require additional design factors.
- Threading: PVC Sch 40 ratings apply to unthreaded pipe (threading Sch 40 is not recommended by the industry); threading CPVC/PVC Sch 80 requires a 50% pressure reduction per Harvel. Ratings in the dataset are plain-end/unthreaded values.
Conventions and data-handling rules applied
- No interpolation, no computation of missing dimensions. Where a source chart does not print a value, the cell is empty. In particular, steel-pipe IDs are blank throughout: the open charts used print OD, wall and weight only, and ID was not back-computed as OD − 2t. (Copper IDs are present because CDA's handbook prints ID explicitly; HDPE IDs are the manufacturer's published average ID, which WL102's own footnote states is a calculated flow-estimating value, not a specification dimension.)
- Weights: Charlotte Pipe publishes plastic-pipe weights per 100 ft; those were divided by 100 to lb/ft (documented unit presentation, not new data). Where Charlotte prints both 10 ft and 20 ft bell-end weights, the 20 ft listing was used consistently.
- HDPE DR 9 discrepancy (resolved, flagged): Duraline's PolyPlus sheet prints DR 9 = 255 psi; WL Plastics/PPI prints 250 psi. The dataset uses 250 psi everywhere (PPI TR-4 / AWWA C906 basis); the single 1/2-in DR 9 row sourced from Duraline for dimensions carries a note flagging Duraline's 255 psi print.
- HDPE weights differ slightly between WL Plastics and Duraline for identical walls (e.g., 4 in DR 9: 2.720 vs 2.751 lb/ft); WL values are used for all WL-sourced sizes.
- Carbon steel heavy-wall correction: the ProjectMaterials combined chart mislabels NPS 4/5 heavy walls (Sch 140/160/XXS pairing); those rows were corrected against its own wall-only chart and Central Steel Supply, and are cited to Central. A phantom NPS 6 Sch 100 listing in the combined chart was omitted.
- Copper discrepancy (flagged): Type L 4 in wall is 0.110 in in the CDA Handbook (used) vs 0.114 in in some secondary tables; weight agrees (5.38 lb/ft) in both.
- SI units: included only where a source publishes them. The source tables used are inch-pound; metric conversion is the engine's job, not the dataset's.
Overlap note
Structural round tube is not duplicated here: ASTM A53 Gr B pipe sizes and ASTM A500 HSS round/square/rectangular sections are covered by the steel shapes dataset's HSS section. This dataset covers pressure/flow pipe and tube dimensions; where a size appears in both (same OD/wall geometry), the shapes dataset is authoritative for structural properties (I, S, r) and this dataset for pressure service data.
Gaps (values that could not be taken from an open published table)
- Steel pipe section properties (I, S, r) — not published in the open schedule charts used; the entire column set is absent. Needed for structural use of pipe; would require an AISC/licensed source or computation from dimensions (out of scope here).
- Steel pipe ID — blank for all carbon and stainless rows (see conventions).
- NPS 38, 44, 46 carbon steel — no openly published chart opened lists full dimensions/weights; no rows.
- Heavy schedules (60–160) for NPS 26 and above are largely unpublished in open charts; coverage there is Sch 5/10/STD/XS plus Sch 20/30/40 where Central publishes them. NPS 40/42/48 have only STD/XS (and Sch 10 for 42).
- 12 carbon-steel rows have wall but no weight (Sch 30 for NPS 3/8–4 and NPS 22 Sch 5): the chart publishing those walls publishes no weight for them.
- Stainless NPS 26 and 28 are not listed in either open chart opened — no rows. No 5S for NPS 1/8–3/8 and no 40S/80S for NPS 22/30 in the charts (shown as not available).
- Copper Type M does not exist for 1/4 and 5/8 in in ASTM B88 — correctly absent. Copper pressure ratings omitted entirely (temper/joint dependence, see above).
- PVC/CPVC ID is blank for all Charlotte-sourced rows (Charlotte prints no ID) and present only on Spears/Harvel rows, which publish Average I.D.
- HDPE 1/2 in has no published ID in the Duraline table (blank). Duraline-only sizes 5, 7, 63, 65 in were not merged in (dataset anchored to the WL102 IPS table). DR 7.3 and DR 15.5 are published by WL102 but outside the requested DR set.
Legal basis
- The values in this dataset are standardized dimensional and rating facts transcribed from openly published manufacturer and industry tables (pipe mills' and manufacturers' published schedule charts and data sheets, Plastics Pipe Institute-based manufacturer tables, and the Copper Development Association's industry handbook), each named in the
source column.
- The standards documents themselves were not copied. No text, tables or scans of ASME B36.10M, ASME B36.19M, ASTM B88, ASTM D1785, ASTM F441, ASTM D3035 or ASTM F714 were used as sources; where search results surfaced standard-document scans/reprints, they were excluded.
- Position (Jeff, 2026-10-20): the data is public, and public facts do not require a license. Dimensions, schedules and pressure classes are functional facts dictated by the standards ecosystem and published openly by manufacturers for specification use; the dataset records the facts with attribution, not any standard's expressive text or table layout.
